[I] I'm Tired of the Other Threads, So I'm Starting My Own (verrry long post) [message #259941] Mi, 26 April 2006 07:57
Stacie Hanes
Welcome to Planet Stacie. Here are today's headlines:

There is a lovely, smart, very tall young lady I met last Thursday, whom I'd
like to date; however, although she's newly single, she's content to remain
so, and also moving out of state in a few weeks. We may still go for a
coffee because she's quite interesting to talk to, but there's nothing
there. Pity, as I was quite taken with her.

Today I learned that I have been awarded a summer teaching fellowship, one
of only four. The "we're very impressed" boilerplate was a nice boost after
the "no, thank you" from Mlle J. And the pay will be nice; now that I live
alone, not getting paid for three months during the summer is an unappealing
prospect. Of course, it means working and being at school during the summer,
which still seems like an unnatural perversion. I'll be done with my
coursework, but I'll probably take the offered course in the Harlem
Renaissance, because the department will pay for it as part of the award,
the grad. coordinator said it would be good to have, and--let's face it--I'm
that kind of person.

I need to be in a bigger city, I think. I am frustrated by the apparent
absence of educated women within, oh, 10 years of my age in either
direction. There just don't seem to be any. Or everyone's paired off. Or
just broke up with someone. The young lady I mentioned earlier was the first
I've met that I really wanted to sit and talk with.

One of the composition program coordinators asked me to go participate in a
panel in New York next March. That's very flattering, as I am in the
literature program--they're impressed with my work using technology in the
classroom. I had to make sure it didn't conflict with another conference I
attend every year, but I jumped at the chance. People like me will have
little choice but to look for hybrid jobs, y'know. . . . Anyway, doesn't
conflict, so no problem. I'm going to have a busy month, though. I may very
well have to fly straight from Ft. Lauderdale to New York. <sigh> I hope it
pays off; I'll be one of the most composition-qualified people in the
literature program, which I just pray makes me a marketable job candidate.
It already paid off in a satisfying funny moment, actually: Pam, the
professor who asked me to go to the conference, asked "have you ever written
a proposal or presented before?" Hehe, yes, like about 8 of them . . .
started as an undergrad, got a division in one organization, running for
office in another. . . . All of which I actually do for the joy of it; if
you ask me, the conferences are the payoff for the paperwork involved in
teaching. So I can't say I dislike the work, because I love it, but there's
still a sense that if this isn't what will get me some kind of consideration
on the job market, please shoot me, because sometimes it's all a bit much.

I've been alternating the good and bad; that was supposed to be a good one,
but I think I may have got sidetracked halfway through.

I may be changing my exam concentrations a bit, which is annoying, but
perhaps for the best. I was planning to have 19th century British novel as
my major area, and sf & Queer Theory as my two minor areas. Well. It turns
out that the only QT professor on campus is none other than my Marx
professor. He's a nice fellow, but I think that we just don't see things the
same way. We talked about doing an exam, and I told him, flat-out, that I
thought he and I would make a disastrously bad exam team. So the graduate
studies coordinator suggested that I do 19th C, early 20th C (British) and
sf/fantasy. That doesn't bother me. It's possible that the theory wasn't a
good fit for my portfolio anyway.

Getting a dissertation committee together is like herding cats. DEAD cats.
Dead BLACK cats in a coal cellar at midnight on a moonless night. My
director is in TIBET this summer, for the love of god. He didn't tell me he
was going to TIBET.

I bought a DVD of "Shaun of the Dead" and found it hilarious.

Arghraghah. That's all I'm saying on the topic of educated women +/-10
years of my age; local availibility thereof.

OK, that's a little cliché, isn't it? Kinda like
"Pseudo-PostExistentialism and Dialectic Materialism in East German

Try "Dead and Breakfast" then :)

Phooey. Also, they have to like girls.

I may have turn turn you into a frog for that. Bearing in mind that I have
spent the last 5 years or so of my life on this, jokes along the lines of
"oh, wouldn't <foo> be better" tend to be received with lighthearted
homicidal mania. ;-)

But basically, those are my interests. The new arrangement isn't much of a
sacrifice, though.

That's kind of besides the point. If they could legally marry other
girls, and run away with half their stuff after a few years, they
wouldn't mind that either. One of the more frequent roadside billboards
'round here advertises reversals of vasectomies. That should give you a
hint or two.

I'm not saying <foo> would be better, I just wouldn't want to compete
with all the others that already plied those grounds.

I don't, exactly. The job market in English Studies is pretty tight no
matter what you specialize in, and it's just plain too late for me to be a
geologist, even if I were so inclined. :-/

Terry Pratchett's work seems to leave those areas pretty much alone as well.
We should see if we can't get him to rectify that. I think it would have to
be a Susan book.

Shaun of the Dead is hysterical. "ZomRomCom" indeed.

I know the feeling ;-)

AAMOF, I don't. Apart from having been single quite a sizable number
of years lately, I'm also very much a loner and quite simply _need_ to
have a *lot* of time by myself. Having more personalities around than
mine[1] for a sizable amount of time make me feel a little bit
oppressed: if it wasn't for the fact that wine _needs_ to be shared,
I'd be a pretty good hermit ;-P

at all time may explain why I need a lot of personal space ;-P
[2] no, not the same mind[3]

It's really handy to have skills in multiple fields. Like, if I don't
feel like interacting with life customers, I can slither off and do Web
sites, or paint, or play with my chainsaw :)
Oh yeah, I forgot, it also helps to be self-employed.

All valuable wisdom. What it has to do with my cold <aahh-CHOO> or
recruiting me a girlfriend, I am not entirely sure.

You were supposed to take the hint, and either buy a PowerBook, a
chainsaw or an easle, put on a wifebeater, and work in the front yard,
in the sunshine, with whatever tool you picked. Geez, do I have to
spell out everything? ;)

Is there an expression in English that amounts to "sawing logs", used to
talk about snoring?

Pah. Modern junk. My grandfather had a chainsaw in teal. It weighed
around 15kg and had a three-foot long blade. My brother and I
dismantled it and fitted it to a bike to make a motorcycle, though.
